Didn’t do much this time, other than the usual eat, shop, eat, shop…

But this time I met up with Ben and Wei Wei and their kids for lunch. Ben lives in Chino Hills, so we each drove half way and met up in Cerritos at the BJ Brewery. It was nice to meet up with old friends, and Ben, sorry to disappoint you on the “glamorous lifestyle” of airline pilots. It’s not glamorous at all… it’s only in the movies… or in the “royal airbus fleet”…
P1030522 P1030524

For dinner Kevin, Michael and I went to a Chinese place near the Santa Anita mall. We were going to Bucca di Beppo, but it’s a bit late, and I need to get Michael back to the hotel so he can fly back later~ Chinese is good too~

There are actually way more stuff than this that I need to bring back…
iPhone4 bumper and the fake carbon back cover from Griffin was courtesy of Apple. The Ed Hardy ones are authentic Ed Hardy stuff, not the cheap ass fake ones they have on Ebay…

And yes, finally, it’s back! My bike is complete!! well.. for now… hahahaha~

Eating alone makes yummy food yucky…

I’m going to nap for a bit, so this will be a short one.

Went to dinner with Alto and Richard today. Alto requested to take a photo of him because he thinks he is all cool looking with his Zara leather jacket and Rayban carbon fiber sunglasses…

Peanut is not far from our hotel, about a 10-minute stroll down the street. You’ll see it soon after you pass the The Great Alaskan Bush Company~ It’s up to you to decided whether to satisfy your tummy first or your…. lust…

We got a nice window seat with a little stream running next to it, and the NBA Finals game 3 is playing on TV, but since Richard and I are flying later, we are stuck with sodas… Alto got himself a Alaskan Ale or something…. Next time…

The waiter recommended the prime rib panini, and it was pretty good~ It’s cooked well done, but is actually pretty tender~ Kinda reminded me of Lawry’s Cutlery… hmmm…. the fries were great, almost like the thick cut potato chips~ The dips were ranch and some Cajun spiced mayonnaise I think, like it~
P1020914 P1020915 P1020920
Cajun…

Overall, I think it’s pretty good, and it’s got outdoor seating too~ It’s more like a sports bar than a restaurant, but the food is great, and they also do breakfast~ Next time, I’m going back to try their pizza and beer~~~

10-05-05 Cinco de Mayo

Posted: May 6, 2010 in Food and drink, US

Today is Cinco de Mayo, which means “the 5th of May” in Spanish.

So today’s dinner is taco. Tacos from taco truck next to a strip bar. They have tacos with cheek, tongue, lip, scalp, mystery parts of cow and pig. It’s good stuff~ We buy two at a time, and stood next to the truck to enjoy this local gourmet. Ghetto style…

Like I said, it’s next to a gentlemen’s club, Bliss, in the parking lot of a auto shop. We parked across the street in front of a liquor store.
DSC01508 DSC01499 DSC01500

I can’t remember which is which, but I had cheek, tongue, chorizo, and… some other mystery meat. They were all in Spanish.
They come with grilled jalapeños, onions, sliced radish, cucumbers, and lime wedges. They also have three different kinds of salsa, mild, medium, and hot. Onions were very very sweet, the jalapenos were hot hot hot, while the radish and cucumber slices can put off the heat, just a bit… If you’re in LA, taco truck is the way to get some real yummy tacos, not the fake American Mexican Taco Bell stuff, and the way to fit in with the local Spanish community… hahaha~
DSC01501 DSC01503 DSC01504 DSC01506 DSC01512 DSC01514

Tomorrow we were suppose to go to Disneyland, but Kevin’s company outing at Disney rescheduled, so… maybe I’ll just go to the supermarket, mall, and, yes, Apple Store…

Second time LO in Miami, same shitty schedule…

The difference this time is that I made it out to the other side of the eight-lane street to get me some South American food~ Actually, I was going to search for the paella that a captain told me last time I was here, but instead, I ended up in Argentina Steak House, having a rib eye steak by myself, and then bought a Tacu-Tacu from El Pollo Inka couple doors down to take back to the hotel.

Alright, let me get on with the steak house first~ Argentina Steak House, obviously, it’s Argentinean, duh~ Last time I saw an Argentinean anything was in downtown Amsterdam. There were loads of Argentinean steak houses over there, but I didn’t try it then. I actually went into this restaurant by mistake, cuz the captain told me, he had the paella in an Argentinean restaurant… but when I saw the menu, nope, no paella here! That’s ok though, since I love steak! So I ordered a rib eye steak, with fried eggs and something I really don’t know… it was in Spanish, kinda sounded like polenta, but I know it ain’t it… could be plantain, but it tasted more like yam… Does anyone know? I also ordered a glass of sangria to complete my meal~

The steak was good, seasoned with salt and pepper, grilled to medium rare, yum! but what makes it Argentinean, was the chimichurri sauce. It’s a mixture of herbs, lime juice (or vinegar), garlic, parsley, shallots, bail, thyme, oregano, and olive oil. It’s suppose to be a condiment that goes with most of the Argentinean grilled meat dishes. I guess it’s because the lime juice and the herbs made the greasy steak lighter on your taste buds, kinda refreshes your palette, so you won’t feel sick towards the end of your meal from all that meat~ (according to wikipedia, Argentineans consumes an average of 67.7 kilos of beef per capita in 2007, with an average of 100 kilo since the beginning of time~ THAT’S A LOT OF BEEF!) Oh, the sangria was good too~ haha~ and the fried yellow thing, I still don’t know what it is… I’m just gonna stick it with yam…

DSC00739 DSC00729 DSC00726 DSC00734DSC00731 DSC00732 DSC00735

So after my meal, I was happy, and I walked past this other restaurant a couple doors down, El Pollo Inka. From the name, I guess it’s chicken something… then I saw the sign says, Peruvian food. Hmmm… I have never had that before either! So I went in, grabbed a menu and started talking to the waiter. They have a lot of stuff on the menu, but it’s mainly separated into three different categories, ceviches, grilled meats, and Tacu-Tacu. I’ve had ceviches, and I just had a grilled steak, but I never had Tacu-Tacu before! So I decided to get one to go for dinner~

Tacu-Tacu, is an Afro Peruvian dish. It’s a pan fried rice dish with seasoned beans mix in the rice. It’s then served with pretty much anything from fried eggs to foie gras. What I had ordered was the Tacu Tacu A La Crema De Mariscos. In English… a seafood cream sauce. There’re shrimp, squid, octopus, and mussels in it.  It’s umm… hard to tell what they put in the sauce to make it yellow, I’m guessing it’s turmeric… cuz there’s not a very distinctive flavor in it… can’t be saffron either since the color is just yellow… but then again…

As for the tacu-tacu, it’s got a sorta crispy outer shell, and the inside had beans and green onions. The beans were seasoned, so by itself, it’s already got some taste to it. It also came with “salsa de aji”, made with Aji chili (which makes it Peruvian), it’s spicy! Not sure what else is in it though… I guess I could go on epicurious.com to find out… maybe later…  How does it taste? It’s quite interesting for sure, I think it’s good, but not very exciting. It’s kinda disappointing in a way, cuz I was expecting something totally different, something I’ve never had before, something… EXOTIC!

Alright, so this ends my food tour for today. Leaving late in the afternoon tomorrow, so maybe, just maybe I’ll go try something else for lunch tomorrow~

New route, Taipei – Kansei – LA, and it already became my favorite route!

P1020381 P1020382
My first meal in Osaka~ Didn’t go downtown this time, and I’m too lazy to explain why… So I took the bus in front of the hotel to Aeon Mall to do my food hunting and shopping. There are actually quite a few places to choose from at the mall, and I want to have them all!!! But sadly, my stomach is only this big and I only have one day… *sigh*

Anyway, back to my first meal. I figured since I’m in Japan, I gotta have some nigiri sushi~ So here’s what I had~
Japanese beef nigiri with fried crispy garlic on top, and otoro – fatty tuna~ YUM!
P1020341 P1020343
I also had squid and umm… some kind of umm… clam… shellfish… Both were quite good~
P1020344 P1020345

Then… I have to have RAMEN!!!!!!!!! The ramen shop I went also have spots in Taipei, but the difference is… This is in Japan!! hahaha~ And being in Japan… You can SMOKE!!! I love Japan!!!  What I ordered was a new ramen debuted a week before I was there. What’s so special was the noodles are different, it’s more… slippery? they call it RYUMEN… The soup is not the milky white pork bone soup, I think it’s chicken and fish broth… with fried onions to stimulate your sense of smell as well as taste. It’s a good bowl of ramen~~ The gyoza are quite good too~ but I’ve had better~
P1020346 P1020347
P1020348 P1020350
Oh, they actually have a little pamphlet that posts the dates that they will debut their special ramen, and are also outlined to show the time period that it will be offered. They actually have it scheduled to the year 2011… Amazing…
P1020352 P1020353 P1020354
For dinner, I went to the terminal to eat, and for 980 yen, I got the set dinner that has, chicken cutlet rice with egg and cold udon. Even though it’s a restaurant inside an airport terminal, it’s still very good! Unlike the food we have at the airport in Taiwan… So sad…

P1020388
P1020387
P1020389 P1020386
This is the walkway from the airport to the hotel. I have no idea what it’s for… But each lantern is printed with a name of a Japanese company… Anyone know what it’s for? or just simply a decoration…
P1020391
I got this at Lawson’s, a convenient store downstairs from the hotel, it’s good stuff I tell you!!! The caramel is bitter, very bitter, which is perfect for what’s underneath it. Actually, underneath the caramel, it’s a think layer of white chocolate, then it’s the ice cream… Yum…
P1020395 P1020398 P1020401
This is the sandwich that we get on the plane. I didn’t think much until I realized the one on the side is not eggs, but pumpkin! It was very good too~~~ Why can’t the food at other stations be this good?!! WHY???!!!!!!
P1020406 P1020407

That actually ends the Japan portion of the trip… I will post what I bought in Japan later I guess… I bought a lot…

So then, the second portion of this trip is LA. Sophia came to the hotel to pick me up after her work, and we headed straight to… Monterey Park for….. Japanese food! More Japanese food, YEAH~~~
She was still in her scrub’s uniform, yeah, she interns at hospital now~
P1020412

One thing I have to say about restaurants in LA, all of the “foreign” food, whether it’s Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Italian, are ALL better and more authentic than the ones in Taiwan… that’s one thing that really gets to me when I eat out in Taipei… though it’s improving, it’s still not good enough…

Alright, back to my dinner. I forgot the name of the restaurant, I will have to ask Sophia later. We ordered grilled chicken meatballs, gizzards, cartilage, cow tongue, quail eggs, and some I can’t remember… And we also had a tofu salad with ume sauce, and a chicken nabe that had a bunch of chicken meat balls and chicken meat in it. The soup was very very good~ thick and rich, just the way I like it~~ I also had a Calpico and of course beer to go with all this food~
P1020418 P1020419 P1020420 P1020421 P1020422 P1020424 P1020425 P1020426

Second day, Grace came to pick up her eyeliners, all 10 of them… and she took me out to have some Mexican food~ As with all Mexican restaurants, free chips and salsa~~ I ordered a lemonade to go with my meal, which is a breakfast burrito. Stuffed with apple smoked bacon, eggs, beans, and cheese. Topped with a scoop of guacamole, some sour cream and green salsa~ It’s yum yum good, and it’s so big, I couldn’t finish it… Why isn’t there a decent Mexican restaurant in Taiwan?

P1020427 P1020430
P1020433 P1020435

So, that’s my 4 day trip to Osaka and LA… I hope I get this route EVERY MONTH!!!

Did I mention the restaurant downstairs from our Hotel is actually pretty good?

So far, I’ve only had burgers there, about… three different kinds of burger, and this time, I decided to try something new… Mushroom cheesecake with fried leeks and blue cheese… Yeah… sounds weird… and it’s not a dessert, it’s an appetizer. It’s not sweet at all, it’s more like a… ummm… very very soft and creamy and fluffy omelet… ummm… no… kinda like a quiche… it’s… quite different, and most importantly, I like it~ But, next time, I’m gonna have to either find someone to share it with, or save half for later… cuz… otherwise I can’t finish my burger… hahahaha~~  The burger this time is cheese stuffed burger. It’s got caramelized onions, mushrooms, provolone cheese, and some cheesy sauce. As usual, YUM~

P1020294 P1020293 P1020296

OK, after discovering that the little fridge can actually keep your ice cream in its frozen solid state, I went out to buy a frozen yogurt from Haagen Dazs. It doesn’t taste like frozen yogurt at all… It’s still creamy like it’s cousin… Hmm…  The Orville Redenbocher’s popcorn is one of my fav snack, and this time I saw caramel flavored. I’m not sure if this is new… and it was after I bought it and back at the hotel that I realized… It comes with packets of caramel, and you have to melt it and pour it on the popcorn and mix it and wait till it cools…. Man.. so much work…

09-07-04 Peter Luger

Posted: July 4, 2009 in Food and drink, US

If you like steaks, go to Peter Luger.

This is one of rare flights where I get to stay in NYC for more than 24 hours. Just so happens, one of the guys from CAL17, Richard, got a reservation at Peter Luger for a late lunch on the 4th of July. So when he asked me if I would like to go, of course I said yes!

Peter Luger, a steakhouse established in 1887, rated 4 stars by the Zagat Survey and voted the #1 steakhouse many many years in a roll, famous for their dry aged USDA Prime Porterhouse and the sizzling thick cut bacon. I’ve been wanting to try this place since I was born.. haha~ They have two locations, we went to the one in Brooklyn since it’s closest to our hotel.

After we got off the train in Brooklyn, we walked for a few minutes and then, there it is~
P1010644 P1010645 P1010646 P1010647 P1010648 P1010649 P1010650 P1010673 P1010651

We actually got there almost an hour early, but they had a few empty tables, so they sat us down right away. Which didn’t give us a chance to hang at the gentlemen’s bar~ That guy peeking in the door was Captain Dogget, yeah, he also came along~ Being an Aussie, he loves meat!

P1010652 P1010672P1010657

The menu, is short and simple, steaks for one, steaks for two, steaks for three, steaks for four… We took the waiter’s suggestion by ordering steaks for two, a rib eye steak, three strips of sizzling bacon extra thick cut , an order of sliced tomatoes and onions (to get rid of the guilt from eating all the meat and fat and grease), an order of creamed spinach, an order of German fried potatoes, and of course, a bottle of Peter Luger Napa to wash it all down~

The bread is nothing out of the ordinary, so…

P1010653 P1010654 P1010659

The wine, was actually made and bottled by Underground Inc. in Napa Valley. I’m not a big wine guy, nor do I know anything about wine, but I thought it was pretty good~ The sauce, is their famous steak sauce, goes well with the tomatoes and onions too~

P1010655 P1010656

The bacon, it was sooooooo good!!! That’s if you like bacon of course~ Very juicy, and not as salty as your supermarket bought bacons~ The tomatoes, I’m not sure what kind, but it was meaty and juicy, very good~ The onions have a little kick to it, but nothing too special.

P1010662 P1010664

Before we get to the steaks, here are some facts about your T-Bone/Porterhouse:
The bigger side, is called the strip loin, if served without the bone, it’s the New York Strip. The smaller side, the tenderloin, is also what we call the fillet mignon. The most tender cut of beef you can get without the fat~
For a steak to be qualified to as a T-Bone steak, the tenderloin must be at least 1/2 inch thick, and to be qualified as a Porterhouse, it has to be at least 1.25 inch thick.

So that’s why steak lovers love a big slab of Porterhouse! You get two cuts of steaks in one!

Alright, the steak… On the left is the rib eye, and porterhouse to the right. They pre-cut it into pieces, and they will put a few slices on your plate, and also spoon some fried potatoes and creamed spinach for you. They did it so quickly, I didn’t get a chance to get a shot of the steak in whole… Oh yeah, we had it medium rare, anything more, you’d be wasting your money!!

P1010666 P1010667 P1010668

Ok, so how does it taste? OMG! Soooooo Gooooood!!!! The waiter put a piece each on to our plate, the strip loin, fillet mignon, and rib eye. I tried the fillet mignon first… so tender… melts in your mouth… then I tried the strip loin, juicy, a bit more chewy (not in a bad way) so you feel it’s existence~ Then, the rib eye, my favorite cut of beet, YUM! Yeah, YUM! The is the best steak I have had in years!!

The creamed spinach was also very good, strongly recommend it! As for the fried potatoes… I think you can do without, but then, that’s me, maybe you might like it~

P1010669 P1010670 P1010671

Over all, if you like steaks, you should come here and give it a try~ Oh, and the service here was also very good, the waiter was friendly and always kept our wine glasses and water glasses full~ As for the price, it’s not cheap, but it is not expensive enough  that you’ll have to eat instant noodles for a month~
The bill came out to be 234.79, with tip, we rounded up to 270, so we paid 90 dollars each. It not that bad at all~ You’ll have to pay more at Ruth’s Chris in Taipei, and correct me if I’m wrong, they don’t age their beef! So I think this is well worth the price~ Oh yeah, you also get a gold coin chocolate~

Oh, one more thing, they take cash only, unless you have a Peter Luger’s credit card. So, bring CASH! hehehe~
